Holy Family Cathedral, Anchorage, AK, USA

On Good Friday 1964 an earthquake with a magnitude of 9.2 on the Richter scale destroyed much of southern Alaska. Part of Anchorage dropped by some feet (the drop is still there in an otherwise flat city) and 90% of the buildings were destroyed.

Afterwards the Pope sent a delegate to Alaska to view the damage and they decided that the City would form the centre of spiritual matters in Alaska. In 1966 an Archdiocese was created by the Roman Catholic Church and the Cathedral of the Holy Family was built to house the congregation.

It is a modern structure and not the most attractive, but is one of the few large churches in Alaska.
