Buildwas Abbey, Shropshire

Savigniac then Cistercian Monks

Mid-Shropshire is excellent Abbey-hunting territory with a number of small but picturesque ruins dotted around the countryside surrounding Shrewsbury.

Buildwas was founded as a Savignac Abbey in 1135 and was absorbed into the Cistercian order in 1147.  It's most noticeable feature today is the arcading down either side of the main nave (see above) which seems overlong for the smaller remains of the rest of the Abbey.

Entrance to the Abbey is for a small fee and it is owned by English Heritage.
