GREAT BRINGTON CHURCH

Northamptonshire

Great Brington Church, Northamptonshire

This particularly handsome church stands on high ground in rural Northamptonshire not far from Althorp House.

A wooden church stood here until it was burnt down in the 13th Century. The church which currently stands here was built between 1220 and 1280 and is particularly outstanding, especially when approached from the north where it dominates the skyline.

The church is best known for containing the monuments of the Spencer family. The family have records here dating to 1508 and John Spencer did much rebuilding work here in the Tudor period. There are some conspiracy theorists who insist that Princess Diana is buried here alongside 19 generations of Spencers.

As if that was not enough to put the church on the tourist trail, it is also the last resting place of Lawrence Washington, the ancestor of George Washington.
