Burwell Church, Cambridgeshire

Burwell Church dates to the Norman period, but almost all you can see today was the work of Master Mason Reginald Ely who worked here in the 15th Century. It is said that he practiced on Kings College Chapel and then moved on to Burwell Church once he'd "got it right".

This is remembered in rhyme:

When the building of Kings' College Chapel was done
Soon after its workmen to Burwell did come
There an elegant structure indeed they did raise
Which to this very day, may be seen to their praise.

The Church was attached to Ramsey Abbey until the Dissolution, the last Abbot of Ramsey lived out his final years at Burwell Parsonage.

In the late 19th Century work was undertaken to repair Burwell and today it is one of Cambridgeshire's best loved churches.
