Fertilia Church, Sardinia, Italy

The small town of Fertilia was founded by Mussolini's facist government in the 1930s as a rival for the main port of Northern Sardinia, Porto Torres. However the town never grew to any great size and once the facists were not in power it declined to a small village.

Because it was intended to be a large town, the church which now looks ridiculously large for such a small settlement was built on a grand scale.

The church is built to a very traditional style, with a cloister and a bell tower. In fact, Fertilia as a whole belies the idea that facist architecture was all ugly and impractical.
