St. Mary's Abbey, York, Yorkshire

Benedictine Monks

St. Mary's Abbey was founded in 1080 and belonged to the Benedictines.  Only a relatively small amount remains of the building, most of which dates to the 13th Century.  The Precinct wall and the gatehouse in Marygate date from the 14th Century.

The Abbey is owned by English Heritage and is open to the public at any time.
