Costa del Azahar, Spain

Peñiscola Church, Costa del Azahar, Spain

The church in Peñiscola stands near the Portal Fosc leading up to the Castle which dominates the town. It was constructed shortly after the Reconquista arrived in this part of Spain and has largely been unaltered since then.

The interior benefited from the temporary residence of the Popes in Peñiscola in the 15th Century during one of the schisms of the Catholic church at that time. Regnal jewels belonging to Popes Benedict XIII, Clement VIII and Felipe II are kept inside as well as a number of objects dating to the schism period of Pope Pedro de Luna.
