ST. MICHAEL PATERNOSTER ROYAL

City of London

St. Michael Paternoster Royal, City of London

This church was founded by the legendary Dick Whittington (in truth a country gentleman from Gloucestershire who came to London to seek his fortune and ended up as Lord Mayor). He is buried in the church and commemorated in stained glass complete with his cat.

The original church was destroyed in the Great Fire and Wren rebuilt it in a rather cramped space. As was often the case with Wren’s City Churches he kept most of the decoration for the upper parts of the Church as the lower sections were largely obscured by other buildings.

Unusually the Luftwaffe did this Church a favour by clearing most of the buildings between it and the Thames and opening up the view of the church in a way Wren had not intended. Surprisingly the views have not been entirely closed up and today this is one of the easiest Wren churches to see in its entirety.
