Clerkenwell, London

Our Most Holy Redeemer, Clerkenwell, London

This rather unusual Italianate church stands isolated in Clerkenwell, off the beaten track somewhat.

It stands on the site of the Spa Fields Chapel, an offshoot of the original Methodist chapel. The design is by John Dando Sedding who, completely against the then current vogue for neo-Gothic constructed an Italianate style church in 1888. His vision extended to frescoes and other Mediterranean influences, but these were not completed. The church was subsequently extended by Henry Wilson, but much of Sedding’s original work remains.
