San Francisco, CA, USA
Standing at almost the highest point in San Francisco this elegant replica of Notre Dame in Paris is the most impressive church in the city.
A church with the same name, Grace Church, was founded in 1849 on the back of the California Gold Rush. This was rebuilt twice and the third church which was nicknamed Grace Cathedral (although it never was an Bishopric) was destroyed after the 1906 Earthquake which ripped through much of San Francisco.
The rich Crocker family gave up their ruined mansion on Nob Hill on the condition that the Church built here would be an Episcopalian Cathedral. Work began in earnest in 1928 to designed by Lewis P. Hobart in a very traditional European Cathedral-style but using modern materials including concrete. It was completed in 1964 and recently received a facelift to make it cleaner and more attractive.
Inside the interior has the hushed feel of Cathedrals everywhere and it is certainly worth getting the exciting tram ride up Nob Hill to come and see this most elegant of US Cathedrals.
