Sollers Hope Church, Herefordshire

What would otherwise be a fairly unspectacular 13th Century church is made more interesting as it is associated with one of Herefordshire’s famous families – the Whittingtons who lived in the village from 1300 to 1546.

It is thought that the church was built by Robert Whittington, the elder brother of his more famous sibling Richard “Dick” Whittington – the famed 3-time Lord Mayor of London.

It is thought Dick would have attended Sollers Hope church immediately before setting off for London (whether his cat was in attendance is a matter for conjecture).

Once the Whittingtons left Sollers Hope became just another tiny Herefordshire village and fell into the typical sleepiness that characterises this county.
