ST. GAVINO'S CHURCH
Porto Torres, Sardinia, Italy
One of the best preserved Romanesque Churches on Sardinia, St. Gavino's stands at one end of Porto Torres on a hill which under normal circumstances would give excellent views of the town. Unfortunately too many modern buildings have been thrown up around the church, so the views are denied.
The church was begun in 1111, the bass relief arcading was added in the 15th Century.
Like every church I tried to visit on Sardinia it was closed when I was there, and with the best will in the world St. Gavino's is the only thing in Porto Torres worth seeing.
