St. Spiridione, Trieste, Italy

The last of the three major churches overlooking the Grand Canal in Trieste, the Serbian Orthodox Church dates to the tail end of the 19th Century. It also complements the neo-classical designs of the other two by being neo-Byzantine, by then a more popular style.

The architect was Charles Maciaccini Milanese. The four domes are capped with mosaics and much gilt work is in evidence, particularly inside.
