Trieste Cathedral, Italy

A church has stood on this site for many centuries. Indeed, before the church there was a Roman temple here, so it could be said that worship has been carried out here for over a millennia.

The Basilica di San Giusto that we can see today is largely 14th Century and was completed in 1400. The interior contains 13th Century frescoes and a wonderfully preserved 12th Century mosaic.

Strangely enough 9 members of the Spanish Royal Family are buried here. A dynastic split in Spain in 1830s lead Carlos V to flee and set up a separate Royal Court in Trieste which continued until 1874. The last Spanish Royal to be interred here was Francisco José de Habsburg in 1975.
