Germany, since reunification, has become one of Europe's largest countries. There is still a divide between the rich west and the poor east, with the capital - once more Berlin - being divided no longer by a concrete wall but more by an economic one.

The far south of the country contains the Black Forest and mountain scenery to rival that in Austria and Switzerland, whilst the north is flatter and dominated by large industrial cities which were heavily bombed in World War II and not necessarily rebuilt in an attractive way.

A succession of attractive towns are dotted about the country; Cologne, Bonn, Munich, Trier and Liepzig amongst them.

Germany is a country which always surprises with its variety and the open friendliness of the German people and deserves a better reputation than its 20th Century history has allowed it.
