Iceland is closer to North America than to the rest of Europe, but its culture is quite emphatically Scandinavian.
The Icelanders are proud of their Viking roots and display them at any opportunity. They are also proud of their island which has some of the most impressive landscapes the world possesses, although it can be a bleak and difficult place to live.
The capital, Reykjavik, is the only major town of any size and is another of Europe's trendiest - if notoriously expensive - capitals.
