MORAIRA CASTLE

Costa Blanca, Spain

Moraira Castle, Costa Blanca, Spain

This little watchtower was started by Juan Bautista Antonelli in the early 16th Century to protect this vulnerable coast from Barbary pirates. It appears that it was not completed until 1742 when it was owned by the Bourbon family whose crest appears above the door.

The castle is the shape of an ox hoof, semi-circular on one side, straight on the other.

Little of importance went on here, but it was attacked by the British in July 1801 when some damage was inflicted.

Today it stands over a popular beach often occupied, ironically, by British holiday makers.
