GOD BLESS THE REFUGEE

by Andrew J. Müller

God bless the refugee
From the dark and lonely silence
From the heat and crying violence
From whatever will be
God bless the refugee.

God bless the refugee
From love's cold torment
From the misbegotten covenant
From which we all flee
God bless the refugee.

God bless the refugee
Who knows not where he's going
Whose bleeding heart is showing
To all and sundry
God bless the refugee.

God bless the refugee
Who have no lovers and no friends
Who has nobody there to attend
Who has no company
God bless the refugee.

God bless the refugee
Who wanders for hours
And sees no spring flowers
Or leaves upon the trees
God bless the refugee.

God bless the refugee
Who to escape the world's strife
Contemplates his own life
To any deep degree
God help this refugee.

This poem appears alongside many others by Andrew in BeWrite Books's "Shaken and Stirred: Poetry from the Far Corners" published in 2002.
