CHATEAU ST. MAIRE
Lausanne, Switzerland
The castle was started by Bishop Guillaume of Menthonay (Bishop of Lausanne) in 1397 and completed by his successor, Bishop Guillaume of Challant in 1425. The castle was a fortified residence for the Bishops and performed the function of a bolthole from the nearby Cathedral.
In 1536 the State of Berne invaded Lausanne forcing Bishop Sébastien of Montfalcon to flee from the Castle through a hidden stairwell and fled the country. The Bernese installed a bailiff into the Castle and from thereon in it performed the function of the local seat of Government – which it still does today.
