The under-rated county of Surrey is overwhelmed by the encroachment of suburban London in the north.  Once out of this urban sprawl you reach a wild land of heath and hills.  Leith Hill, on the North Downs, is the highest point in southern England. In the south of the county the chief towns are Guildford and Farnham, both possessors of excellent Castles. A string of smaller towns such as Reigate, Redhill and Dorking skirt along the southern edge of the North Downs above this, and then beyond the M25 the landscape becomes increasingly urban; by the time you are hitting places such as Croydon, Banstead and Sutton you are thoroughly in the London conurbation and the rural landscapes of southern Surrey are long forgotten beyond that as you head towards the Thames you are effectively within London itself. This gives the county a very split personality between London and not-London.

Of the county's Castles only Guildford and Farnham boast much remains.  Farnham having the most peculiar keep within a motte within a keep system of construction!
