Sarande and Butrinti ruins - Shaun and Alison - 1995
Albania is one of the poorest countries in Europe. Having been the sight of fighting for many centuries (as it still is today) Albania has suffered in recent years from a Communist regime that was so isolationist it would have nothing to do with any other country except China. Until the early 1990s there were no land routes into Albania from any of its neighbouring countries. Albania's capital city is Tirana.
Much of the interior is mountainous and the country has a long way to go before it becomes a tourist destination, particularly in the north where ethnic tensions exist with neighbouring Serbia, particularly over the Kosova disputed territory.

From Corfu we travelled by ferry to Albania for a day. Here are the pictures Alison took; some more words will follow soon.
